As an experienced professional singer, I know what it's like to sing onstage with a band, to sing in choirs, to perform solo, to do commercials, to sing live on national television, to sing in front of 5 people and 50,000 people. I know the joy of having my voice work really well and the panic of experiencing vocal problems in public. I have experienced being a beginner, having stage fright and surviving it all.

I love to teach singing because it allows me to support people in moving through their fears, learning new skills and having the confidence to perform -- to really be authentic in front of an audience. Reinforcing what you already know how to do (and may not know it) and showing you how to have choices when singing is a big part of what I teach.

In the first lesson I give to a new student, I walk you through an overview of what parts of the body are involved in making sound, how you are using this vocal system and how Nature intended us to use this system. This gives you the awareness you need to make changes in the way you breathe and make sound. During the second lesson you will learn the first 5 vocal exercises on my CD. These are the building blocks of making sound correctly -- no matter what style you sing. Through vocal exercises and singing songs this new way of creating sound can become automatic. As well as teaching vocal principles, strength and endurance training, vocal survival techniques and song coaching I also offer as part of the normal content of lessons the recording of a demo song.
By recording a vocal track to background music, you can speed up the learning curve and also end up with a recording that showcases your skills. Overdubbing (re-recording) the vocal gives you the chance to make changes in the performance and learn what works and what doesn't work. In this way you can build functional technique as well as begin to develop style. Also 3 to 4 times a year I hold Performance Night where students can, if they wish, perform through a professional sound system on a public stage. This gives everyone, no matter what their skill level the chance to “experience the joy of singing”.
